Armigers
In Scotland, someone who registers a Coat of Arms (Arms or Armorial bearings) in the Register of Armorial Bearings of Scotland, is known as an Armiger. The effect of being granted arms is that it confers nobility on the grantee, his heirs and successors in perpetuity. An armiger is a noble of the ancient noblesse of Scotland.
Armorial bearings are granted by the crown (Queen Elizabeth) through her supreme officer of arms of Scotland, The Lord Lyon King of Arms. The Lord Lyon's jurisdiction extends to heraldry and matters of Chiefship of Clans.
The above arms are the sole property of this armiger and may be used only by him and his heir (with the addition of a label of three points). For anyone to use these, even with his express permission, is in Scotland a criminal offence. The arms do however, have the function of raising the entire name of Grewar to the nobility. The name is now "known" by the Court and the Crown and this is a focus of great pride for all Grewars throughout the world.
More information on these arms is available here.
Tartan
Tartan is recognised the world over as a Scottish icon. Tartans are synonymous with families and clans. At present no Tartans have been registered for the Grewars. The Society would like to raise £1000 to design and register our first tartan. It is proposed this would be a dress tartan, for evening wear. Once registered with the Scottish Tartans Authority (or the forthcoming statutory Tartans register) this may be used by Grewars and those of Grewar / Gruer descent throughout the world to show their pride in being part of the worldwide family.
